AIDS Law Project: Year 2008 – R2, 000,000.00 Year 2009: R1, 500,000.00
The AIDS Law Project is a human rights organisation that seeks to influence, develop and use the law to address the human rights implications of HIV and AIDS in South Africa, regionally and internationally. In particular, it uses legal policy processes and litigation to protect, promote and advance the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS as well as to change socio-economic and other conditions that lead to the spread of infectious diseases and their disproportionate impact on the poor. In addition, it conducts and publishes research in order to assist with policy formulation and the development of appropriate legal and regulatory frameworks needed to respect, protect, promote and fulfill human rights.
The ALP believes that empowering vulnerable people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS with knowledge of the law and human rights is effective and sustainable in tackling the epidemic. They work in partnership with other human rights organisations to educate and train people about law, human rights and how they can use the legal framework. The ALP is committed to the highest level of professionalism, accountability, transparency and respect for people's equality, dignity, privacy and autonomy.
AIDS Consortium: Year 2008 - R1,800,000.00 : Year 2009 – R2,400,000.00
The AIDS Consortium facilitates a unity of purpose network of over a thousand AIDS service organisations across the country to address the needs of people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. AFSA’s grant was used towards supporting the core costs of the Consortium.
Corridor Empowerment Project: Year 2008 - R6 333 333.00 : Year 2009 – R5,000,000.00
This is a non-governmental organisation that manages HIV and AIDS programmes in the long-distance road freight industry in South Africa. Currently, it coordinates thirteen primary health care centres for truck drivers located along the national road network.
Centre for AIDS Development Research & Evaluation (CADRE) Year 2008/9 R4 000 000.00
CADRE undertakes HIV and AIDS social research and programme development. The organisation was involved in the production of the fourth series of Tsha Tsha, a TV drama series, with a total of 78 episodes that is currently being broadcast.
Sonke Gender Justice: Year 2009: R2,000,000.00
The overall goal of this project is to prevent gender-based violence, reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS and achieve greater gender equality through a range of activities including encouraging men and boys to advocate for a more gender-equitable society rooted firmly in a strong human rights culture, to take a clear stand against domestic and sexual violence in their own lives and in their communities and reducing behaviours that put themselves and their partners at risk of HIV infection. Its One Man Can Campaign uses a range of evidence-based strategies to promote gender transformation, including training and technical assistance to government and civil society organisations, community education and mobilisation, and advocacy for the implementation of existing gender and HIV and AIDS related policy and legislation. AFSA funded the One Man Can campaign.
AIDS Legal Network: Year 2008: R1,250,000.00 : Year 2009 - R1,500,000.00
ALN is a non-governmental human rights organisation based in Cape Town, Western Cape. It is committed to the promotion, protection and realisation of fundamental rights and freedom of people living with, and affected by, HIV and AIDS through capacity building, education and training, research, networking, campaigning, and lobbying and advocacy.
Field Band Foundation: Year 2008: R1,400,000.00 : Year 2009 – R1,200,000.00
The main function of the FBF is the establishment, development, and promotion of educational and recreational community-based marching bands. Their programme aims at encouraging behavior changes among young people so that they will strive to foster an HIV
negative generation among the FBF members. The programme is constantly improving and expanding in order to ensure that these young people stay HIV negative. The AFSA grant was awarded for core funding purposes.
Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre: Year 2009 – R3,000,000.00
Masimanyane Women's Support Centre is a non-profit international women's organisation based in East London. Their focus is on gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights and the gendered nature of HIV and Aids. It aims to build the capacity of women and human rights advocates to claim and realise women's human rights. This is done through the development of new knowledge and the utilisation of a rights-based approach. It has grown since it was set up in 1995 as a crisis and support centre for women who experienced domestic and sexual violence to national advocacy on violence. Masimanyane is currently the coordinator of the African regional network on sexual and reproductive rights, Amanitare.
Lead Afrika: Year 2009 – R2,000,000.00
LeadAfrika presently initiates and coordinates several development initiatives and university networks include both African and other international alliances. The organisation uses the skills of experts with academic, business and research experience to facilitate appropriate leadership development in the African context. It is a multi-university initiative and draws on staff from a number of universities. It facilitates the development of appropriate consortia to meet client requirements.
LeadAfrika leads and conducts leadership development training projects within the context of various sectors and their extensive network provides additional capacity and expertise in the services that they deliver. Their approach to assist organisations is in line with South Africa’s vision of transformation and the empowerment of previously disadvantaged communities. Their efforts have, through collaboration with strategic partners, led to considerable growth with Leadership as a dynamic source of direction and energy for development. This success has enhanced their focus on leadership development, economic development, and the empowerment of women and youth.
